Chrysler Group Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne Named a 'Michiganian of the Year'

June 20, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -  Chrysler Group LLC Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne has been named a Michiganian of the Year for 2012 by The Detroit News. The award honors individuals who exemplify excellence, courage, determination and passion.

Sergio Marchionne has been recognized for successfully transforming Chrysler Group when most had left it for dead. Additionally, The Detroit News recognized Marchionne for his efforts to engage in the comeback of southeast Michigan and the city of Detroit, citing his service as Chairman of United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s annual fund-raising campaign in 2012, his support of significant local causes and plans to open Chrysler Group offices in downtown Detroit.

“From the high-profile Super Bowl ads featuring Eminem and Clint Eastwood, to Marchionne’s decision to keep open Chrysler’s Jefferson North factory and reopen its Conner Avenue plant, to the creation of a new satellite headquarters in the historic Dime Building – now renamed Chrysler House – Marchionne’s commitment is undeniable,” The Detroit News wrote regarding its decision to honor Marchionne among its 11 honorees this year.

“The comeback we’re experiencing at Chrysler Group is a testament to all of the men and women of Chrysler, and of this region, who found within themselves the courage, the character and the willpower to start anew and to do what so many said could not be done,” Marchionne said. “This recognition serves as yet another incentive not only to continue on the path we have set for ourselves, but to continue to contribute to the revitalization of this town in a way that does justice to its phenomenal history.”

Chrysler Group reported a $473 million profit in the first quarter of 2012, more than quadruple its results in the first quarter of 2011. And in May, it recorded its 26th consecutive month of sales increases.
